“I’m intrigued by you, Carmen. Your psychiatrist isn’t the only human I’ve used to get close to you. In this realm, I am weak. But there are those who would take advantage of my current state, so I can’t let anyone see the wound you gave me, or let them know that it’s so slow to heal, it’s draining my power. If even one of the demons or Fallen under my control find out, I’ll lose everything. And it will be all your fault.

“You’ve forced me to possess humans; to borrow their strong, earthly bodies for a while in order to conceal my injury. And in the flesh, the strength I still have is amplified.

“You’ve proven to be resistant; very difficult to break, but also fascinating. I’ve enjoyed watching you, and you should know that no human has held my attention in ages. As it was in the beginning, I crave power and those who hold it. As the reigning ruler of Purgatory, I see the potential of aligning myself with you.”

Shivers slithered up my spine. “I would say I’m flattered, but I’d be lying. And I’m not the ruler of Purgatory.”

He smiled. “But you are. There’s been no one in power since you returned to Earth. If you were to return to the realm, your abilities would return. Your strength would be very useful to me. In fact, I’m counting on it.”

Glaring at Lucifer, I gritted out the one question I hoped I wouldn’t soon regret. If he’d been pretending to be Zane, I was going to kill him. “Whose body have you been… borrowing?”

“I believe you know him as Cass.”

The searing feel of his skin, the red glow and power that emanated from him. It made perfect sense.

“Gabriel has been having great difficulty keeping me away from you.”

I closed my eyes. Gabriel. I saw it in his movements, some of his mannerisms. “Gabriel is Zane.” It wasn’t a question. I knew the answer. He’d comforted me, was again training me, and warned me against seeing Dr. Deabru, against Cass. He’d been staying with me to guard me because Gabriel knew all along that Lucifer was coming for me.

“All the pieces are falling into place for you. So what was it that threw you over the edge? My eyes? The pool water? The nightmares? The photograph of Michael?” He smiled at my discomfort. “I’ve seen what’s in your mind.”

“It was Pamela. She came to visit me.”

His eyes unfocused as he saw my memory in his mind. “Another soul? She returned to Earth and found you... That’s never happened before, but given the technology in this time, it’s really no wonder. Social media is one of my favorite tools.” Lucifer took another step toward me. “I need your help, Carmen.”

I felt the glamour he was projecting toward me, and suddenly everything in me wanted to give him whatever it was he wanted.

He smiled before another coughing fit hit him and the blood on his shirt spread toward his stomach.

“I want you to retrieve my sword from Purgatory,” he said, staring into my eyes.
